Privacy notice

How the campaign handles the personal information you share through this site.

What we collect from supporters

  • Your full name and email address. We do not collect a supporter phone number.
  • Your city or town, province or territory, and Canadian postal code.
  • Your federal riding, and a snapshot of the riding and MP name at the time you submit.
  • The text of the letter you write to your Member of Parliament.
  • An optional associated swim school, and the partner link that referred you, if any.
  • Your petition consent, privacy consent and optional newsletter consent, with the time recorded.

Campaign submission records do not include your IP address, and the campaign application does not install advertising trackers.

When you submit, the campaign records your letter and, where email delivery is configured, sends it to your MP's published office address from a campaign address, with your email address set as the reply address so your MP can answer you directly. We never send mail that appears to come from your own address. If automatic delivery is unavailable or fails, we keep your submission and offer you the option to email the letter to your MP from your own email account instead.

We also send you one confirmation email so you can confirm your signature on the campaign petition. The confirmation link expires after 48 hours, and we store only a one-way hash of the link, never the link itself. Only confirmed signatures are counted in the campaign's public supporter total.

Email is delivered through a third-party email service acting on the campaign's instructions. Only the information needed to deliver the message is shared with it.

Finding your federal riding

When you enter a postal code, our server sends only that postal code to Open North's Represent service to identify the matching federal riding. Your name, email address, swim-school association, consents and letter text are never sent to Open North. MP names and contact details come from the campaign's own House of Commons–derived dataset, not from Open North. Read the Open North privacy policy.

Some postal codes cross riding boundaries, so we may occasionally ask you to confirm which riding you live in.

Why we collect it

  • Administering the campaign and responding to you.
  • Keeping a record of your letter and helping you send it to your MP, as described in the consent you give when you submit.
  • Reporting the campaign's reach by riding, city or town and province. Public reporting never includes supporter contact details.
  • Sending campaign updates, only if you opted in.

Swim-school partner applications

If your school applies to be a partner, we collect the school name, contact name, email, contact phone, optional website, city or town, province or territory, and the logo file you upload with its original filename. Uploaded logos are stored privately and reviewed manually; nothing is displayed on the site until it is approved. Applicant contact details are never published.

How consent works

Petition consent, privacy consent and newsletter consent are separate choices. Newsletter and campaign-update consent are optional and off by default. You can withdraw them at any time by contacting us.

Who can see your information

Submissions and applications are stored in the campaign's managed database and file storage. Only campaign administrators, using server-side credentials, can read supporter or applicant records; the public site can never read them back.

Access, correction and deletion

You may ask us to provide, correct or delete the information we hold about you, or to withdraw a consent. Contact the Canadian Swim School Alliance and mention the 0% GST/HST on Swim Lessons campaign. Contact the Canadian Swim School Alliance.
